Hedge cutting and topiary in Ipswich for garden hedges, boundary hedges and shaped specimens. We cut to keep the hedge thick at the base, leave a tidy finish, and take every bit of the cuttings away with us.
Most hedges are cut once or twice a year, and the timing matters. Cutting too late in autumn leaves fresh growth exposed to frost. Nesting birds are protected by law through spring and early summer, so we check a hedge over before cutting during that period.
More Information
A hedge should be slightly narrower at the top than the bottom so light can reach the lower branches. Hedges cut straight up and down go bare at the base over time. Getting that taper right keeps the whole hedge green from the top down to the ground.
Topiary needs light, regular cutting rather than one hard cut a year. Box, yew and privet all take shaping well. We keep balls, cones and spirals in shape, and can bring back a shape that has grown out, although that may take a couple of seasons.
STILL NOT SURE?
Most hedges in Ipswich are cut between late summer and early autumn, once the main growth has finished and nesting season is over. Fast growing hedges such as leylandii often need a second cut in early summer. We avoid cutting while birds are nesting.
Yes. All cuttings are raked up and taken away as part of the job, and the price we quote includes that. If you would rather keep the cuttings for composting or a log pile, tell us and we will stack them wherever you want them.
It depends on the species. Yew, beech, privet and hornbeam regrow from old wood, so they can be cut back hard. Leylandii and most other conifers do not regrow from brown wood, so cutting into it leaves a permanent bare patch. We check before cutting.
Hedge work has been part of Gardenwise Landscaping and Gardening for 25 years, from single garden hedges to long boundary runs. We work off ladders and platforms for tall hedges and clear the site properly afterwards, because the mess is usually what people dread most. Every job is quoted free.
