Groundworks and excavation in Ipswich for driveways, patios, foundations and garden levelling. Digging out to the right depth, dealing with soft ground and getting the drainage right is what stops a finished surface sinking.
Excavation means taking out soil, old surfaces and anything soft down to a firm level. All of that spoil has to leave the site, usually by grab lorry. It is the heaviest part of any paving or building job and the part most often underestimated.
More Information
Some ground will not carry a load however much stone goes on top of it. Where we hit soft or waterlogged material we dig deeper, use a geotextile membrane to separate it from the sub base, or add drainage. It costs more up front and prevents a failure later.
Every finished surface has to sit at the right height against doors, damp courses, gullies and boundaries, and fall the right way. We set the levels before digging, so the finished patio or driveway ends up where it should be rather than being adjusted at the end.
Groundworks grew out of doing our own driveway and patio bases rather than waiting on other trades. Gardenwise Landscaping and Gardening has 25 years of experience around Ipswich and owns the machines, so digging, levelling and drainage all happen on our own schedule. Quotations are free.

Most of the cost is in what leaves and what arrives. Spoil has to be dug out, loaded and tipped, then stone has to be brought in and compacted. Machine hire, lorry loads and tipping charges all add up before a single block gets laid.
Yes. Before excavating we look for drain runs, inspection covers, water pipes, gas and electricity supplies, and dig carefully where anything may run. Older properties often have services in unexpected places, so we work with care rather than assuming a clear dig.
A driveway typically needs digging out to around two hundred and fifty millimetres or more below the finished level, deeper if the ground underneath is soft. A patio needs less. The exact depth depends on the ground conditions we find once digging starts.
